Mixing lead vocal tracks can be a challenge as we often put ourselves under immense pressure to get them balanced tastefully within a mix. Mixing a lead vocal track is generally the last process most producers and engineers address in a mix as it’s the cherry on the cake, the feature, the main element that our listening audience’s ear will latch onto, sing along with and most importantly connect with emotionally. Those points together illustrate how pressure can start to build up when we mix lead vocal tracks but what can we do to make our lives easier when all we want is to get a great sounding vocal sound? Setting a tasteful amount of compression is more often than not the main reason why so many struggle mixing vocals. Too much compression and a vocal can sound strangled and lifeless, too little and a vocal can sound dynamically intermittent or disconnected from a mix. How then can we process the dynamics of lead vocals outside of traditional approaches that can help us sit vocals purposefully in a mix? In this series of videos we explore four different ways that you can use to process the dynamics of your lead vocals. Each of these approaches can be used individually on lead vocals or indeed you can blend several of these together to produce great sounding vocals in your next mix.

Waves Vocal Rider: 🤍 Learn how to adjust vocal levels automatically using Waves Vocal Rider with this quick and easy tutorial.
Vocal Rider: 🤍 First thing is to adjust TARGET. If the slider is above the yellow signal level the Rider will assume that the volume is very low and will move up and stay at the maximum all the time. If the slider is below the yellow level of signal the Rider will assume that the volume is very high and will move down and stay all the time at the minimum. Of course this indicates that the ideal position of the slider is in the middle. To determine the center we will move the slider out of the signal range and we will observe the yellow line for a while to locate the highest and lowest peaks. Then all we have to do is place the slider in the middle of these two measurements. Now we can see how the fader stays at an average zone and goes up or down against the volume changes of the voice track, that is, it reduces the loud notes and increases the soft ones. The next step is to match the speed of the fader's reaction with the speed of the vocal performance. FAST makes the fader react instantly to changes in volume, SLOW reacts smoothly. None of these positions is better than the other so the best way to determine which is correct is to choose the speed where the volume changes are less noticeable (less pumping). Then we have to adjust VOCAL SENSITIVITY. This knob determines the amount of volume correction that will be performed by the rider. The job of the rider is usually not to put all the notes exactly at the same level but to stabilize them just a little so that later the compressor does not have to work as much. This button does that which also prevents the pumping effect. To the left the effect is reduced so that it acts discreetly while to the right the effect is applied in all the splendor of which a robotic algorithm is capable. BUT wait!.. There's MORE!!! Once the sound is stabilized, #Vocal Rider can listen to the accompanying music and automatically determine the ideal volume of the voice according to the content at all times. For that we are going to select all the instrument tracks, in this case it is easier to select all the #stems (except for the voice of course) and we are going to insert a pre-fader send channel. Now we are going to create an auxiliary track whose input is going to be assigned to this send channel that we will rename "instr". Now we can assign the output channel of the auxiliary track to a monophonic bus that we are going to rename "instr out". Now let's sum the L and R channels converting the auxiliary track into a monophonic track using Avid Downmixer (this step is necessary in Pro Tools since the sidechain inputs of the plugins are mono, in other #DAW you may not need to do this). (To keep the same volume after summing the L and R channels to mono we will lower the output volume control of DownMixer to -3dB.) Now we simply open Vocal Rider and in the sidechain input box of the plugin we select "instr out" Back in Vocal Rider we just have to adjust MUSIC SENSITIVITY to determine the amount of influence we want the music to have on the final volume of the voice. As in the case of VOCAL SENS, lower values sound more discreet and natural. You can also help yourself by looking at the green signal LED that indicates how much influence the music is having on the voice. If after all these steps you still hear pumping or other artifacts try hiding the plugin interface and let your ears rest for a moment. It can happen that if we keep looking as the fader goes up and down, our brain begins to imagine volume changes that are not there...
