How to use Linear Advance in Marlin

Prusa research has recently updated the MK3 firmware (3.2.0 RC1) to include linear advance. This is an advanced feature of the Marlin firmware that aims to account for the pressure of the molten plastic inside the nozzle. Using LA should allow vastly faster printing with little reduction in quality amongst other benefits. Please note that ideally you should perform steps one and two for each brand of filament and determine a K value for each different material. This video serves as a guide to getting started. Be prepared for some toiling to get ideal results. This lesson features a Prusa i3 MK3 and Simplify3D but this can be applied to any 3D printer using Marlin firmware. *edit: I made a mistake in the part where I measure with the ruler. This was actually done a couple of weeks ago and then refilmed for this video. I should have said 21mm left, not 19mm. This would mean 99mm extruded instead of 100mm. Linear advance is a firmware feature that controls the timing of the extruder separate to the other axes, with a focus on managing pressure inside the nozzle. The result should be more consistent extrusion, especially around corners and other changes of direction. You should also be able to print faster without the quality dropping off so much. This great feature was introduced into Marlin by Sebastianv650, and once enabled in the firmware, is tuned visually by inspecting a calibration pattern to find the best K value. This guide uses linear advance V1.5. Please note the K value will differ for various filaments, and each one you want to use should be tuned. You can temporarily turn off linear advance by setting K to zero. As I noted in the last video, I decided to *not* use linear advance with this printer as of now. I could not get results to be acceptable, even with repeated retraction and linear advance tuning. My final results (after printing and doing some modifications to the values we found in the videos): E-steps - right on at 100, no change to EEPROM Flow - no adjustment; however, I am finding that initial layers and brim/skirt flow rates are best at about 105% (which I adjust in my slicer - Cura). I leave the walls at about 98% flow, and the infill and other layers I leave at 100% flow. Temperature (for Matte Navy Blue Eryone PLA) - I"m now printing the first layer at 230c and normal layers at 207c. My bed temperature is at 68c for all layers. Retraction settings - 4.25mm at 50mm/sec. This is a bit more retraction speed than we tuned for, but I've found it's actually better with 'real world' prints. Acceleration - I wound up doing a couple more tests as several forum members recommended much lower accel settings. I found that the ER-20 has two "sweet spots" - one at 1100 mm/sec and another at 600 mm/sec. I now have my print and travel acceleration set to 600 mm/sec, and my retraction acceleration I have left at 1200 mm/sec. Realistically, being conservative here makes sense, as there will be little to no overall print timing changes with acceleration changes in this range for a small volume printer. Remember that acceleration is the speed "getting up to print speed" - which will probably be around 45-55mm/sec. The change to 600 mm/sec is very minor. Remember you can set this on your LCD or using the M204 command through Pronterface. Junction Deviation - as expected, with acceleration down to 600, junction deviation tuned higher (which is actually less slow down impact) at 0.09. This is the M205 line using Pronterface (or you can adjust it right on your LCD). Linear Advance - not using it. It tuned around 3.0 the last time I tried. That's it! So many people have problems with getting good results on their prints, some problems are mechanical, and some problems can be avoided using the slicer. In this video I'll share some of my best tips for getting clean prints and I'll do it on a print I've never made before. Most of these concepts are simple, one that most people overlook is the seam location, and the other main one is that the Y axis carries a lot more weight than the x, and reducing that weight will produce better results unless you already print very slow. A smaller nozzle again will produce better results than I've shown, however I never print with a 0.4mm nozzle, I usually print with a 0.8mm up to 1mm. In this video we try out input shaping using an accelerometer, which was my primary motivation for building this machine. It didn’t disappoint and in my opinion represents a major step forward for 3D printing. Finally a firmware with input shaping that doesn't require a Pi or a Pad. How good is it? UPDATE The bug with Creality's TMC2208 stepper drivers and linear advance has actually been fixed and shouldn't be an issue anymore. INSTRUCTIONS! 1. Find Marlin and Config files for your printer here: 🤍 2. Open in VScode, you need PlatformIO IDE too. Details for that are here: 🤍 3. Change whatever you need to change for your printer and turn off linear advance for the testing phase. 4. Uncomment input shaping for the x and y axes and make sure the shaping_menu is uncommented too so you can change things easily - applies to LCD12864 displays. 5. Build the firmware and flash your printer. 6. Print the ringing tower as your test model, available here: 🤍 Make sure your speeds and accelerations are high, if you're using classic jerk then they should be high too. When using Prusa Slicer make sure the machine limits are ignored or raise them appropriately. The gcode for running through varying frequencies can be found at the link above and can be added in Prusa slicer 🤍 "Printer Settings" - "Custom G-code" - "Before layer change G-code" 7. Use a caliper to measure the height that corresponds to the least ringing for both axes. Add these to the TH3D calculator found here: 🤍 8. Change your input shaping frequencies via the menu, pronterface or firmware if using the menu make sure to save settings in the configuration menu, if using pronterface use an M500 command to save the settings. 9. When the correct frequencies have been added you can then choose the correct damping factor. This part was not mentioned on the section on Input Shaping on the Marlin website and I think this was because it might not require much alteration. We couldn't actually see much difference when we printed a test file at varying factors. However, if you want to be thorough you can do it. To do so, print the same ringing tower with the "Input Shaping Zeta Testing code" available here: 🤍 10. Check which layers have the best performance and choose the correct damping factor from there, adding it like the frequencies via the menu, pronterface or in the firmware. 11. At this stage it is best to recalibrate linear advance at higher speeds. 12. That's it! Print at high speed and see what happens! Continuing the series on stepper motor driver upgrades for your 3D printer, comes another highly requested video: a complete guide to the TMC2208. Like the TMC2100, this driver offers very quiet operation with stealthchop2. It can be used in legacy mode as a drop in replacement, or configured using one time programming to be in spreadcycle. The best option is to connect it to your mainboard via UART and make dynamic changes to stepper current and stepper modes on the fly with gcode. This video guide takes you step by step through how to configure for the three available modes, including setting microstepping, VREF and any Marlin firmware changes. This guide is to suit an MKS Gen L mainboard previously fitted to an Ender 3. There will be slight differences between 2208 board manufacturers but I've tried to account for those as much as possible. As with the TMC2100s, you won't need TL smoothers or stepper motor dampers. You can also fit less of them (eg only X and Y axis) to save money.
