Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, 'Only Ukraine is saying this. Have you ever heard such words from Russia? While he is a permanent member of the Security Council (UNSC). for which reason? After all, what is the reason that Japan, Brazil, Turkey, India, Germany or Ukraine are not its members. The day will surely come when this issue will be resolved. Russia has been supporting India's bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for long time on the other hand China is the only country which has not yet supported India's bid to become a member of the UNSC. At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations. India deserves a permanent member of the Security Council As a major world power, India has called for reforms to international organisations like the UNSC, IMF, WB, WTO, etc., such as making them more inclusive, giving everyone a voice, and making them more democratic. When there have been problems, India has been one of the first to call for cooperation and shared responsibility. India's permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council is the strongest voice in favour of the change. India wants a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. It is doing this through multilateral diplomacy by forming groups like India, Brazil, and South Africa and G4 Nations (Brazil-Germany-India-Japan). Since PM Modi took office, India has worked hard to become a permanent member of the UNSC with veto power.

The UN Charter of 1945 grants a permanent seat to 5 countries on the United Nations Security Council - "US, UK, France, Russia, and China." These permanent five can unilaterally block any council resolution by using an exclusive power known as the 'veto.' The P5 can veto any substantive resolution of the UN Security Council regardless of what the international community thinks about it. Stewart M. Patrick, senior fellow and director of the International Institutions and Global Governance Program at the Council on Foreign Relations, outlines the debate and offers analysis of the promises and obstacles on the path to UNSC reform and expansion. Patrick says U.S. officials are "really ambivalent" on the question of Security Council enlargement despite President Obama's endorsement for India's and Japan's bids for permanent seats. The elected five countries, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia and South Africa, are to join the five permanent members of the 15-nation council starting on January 1, 2019 for a two-year term. They will replace the five non-permanent members serving from 2017 to 2018. Indonesia drew more votes than the Maldives in the contested election for one Asia-Pacific seat by 144 to 46, while the other four candidates ran unopposed. The council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions and has the power to impose sanctions and authorize the use of force. Russia vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on Friday demanding that Moscow immediately stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all troops, a defeat the United States and its supporters knew was inevitable but said would highlight Russia’s global isolation. The vote was 11 in favor, with Russia voting no and China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstaining, which showed significant but not total opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
