Author Ward Wilson advocates eliminating nuclear weapons. Defense consultant Peter Huessy says that's unrealistic. 🤍 - Is it imperative that the world eliminate all nuclear weapons? That was the topic of a live debate hosted by the Soho Forum on September 19, 2022. Ward Wilson is the author of Five Myths About Nuclear Weapons and executive director of RealistRevolt. He argued that nuclear weapons have almost no practical application, and it's time to end world leaders' fascination with their awe-inspiring power. Peter Huessy is director of strategic deterrent studies at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies and president of his own defense consulting firm, GeoStrategic Analysis. He argued that we can't get to nuclear abolition without getting other nuclear powers on board, including Russia and China, both of which see nuclear weapons as essential tools in their foreign policy agendas. The debate was held at the Sheen Center in downtown Manhattan and was moderated by Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein. Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said Russia will do everything to provide security during referendums in eastern Ukraine, adding that the country will use all the means at its disposal to protect its territory. The Russian leader's televised address to the nation comes a day after Russian-controlled regions in eastern and southern Ukraine announced plans to hold votes on becoming integral parts of Russia. Putin accused the West of engaging in "nuclear blackmail" and noted "statements of some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO states about the possibility of using nuclear weapons of mass destruction against Russia." "To those who allow themselves such statements regarding Russia, I want to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and for separate components and more modern than those of NATO countries and when the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal," Putin said. He added: "It's not a bluff." The referendums, which have been expected to take place since the first months of the military operation, will start Friday in the Luhansk, Kherson and partly Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions. Thirty years after the end of the Cold War, the United States and Russia are yet again standing face to face over Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has renewed nuclear threat to the West, possesses the biggest weapon ever made, the world’s largest ever nuclear device – the Tsar Bomba or "the Emperor of Bombs". On October 30, 1961, at the peak of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev sent an unmistakable warning to the West by testing the most powerful weapon mankind had ever seen. The Tsar Bomba was 2000 times more powerful than the American bomb dropped on Nagasaki and 10 times the total firepower used in the entire Second World War. Can the course of the war in Ukraine today force Russia to resort to its deadly nuclear weapons? Will Putin use the world’s largest nuclear bomb if tensions with the West over Ukraine escalate? The new Cold War - More nuclear weapons in Europe? | DW Documentary

As Russia invaded Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin blatantly threatened to use nuclear weapons. A Western military intervention could lead to an incalculable escalation, and the return of nuclear weapons in Europe has experts worried. After the end of the Cold War, thousands of nuclear weapons were withdrawn from Europe. But three decades later, the political situation has once more escalated dramatically, with increasing levels of new nuclear weapons in Europe. Even in 2018, experts agreed that the situation had deteriorated. At that time, US President Donald Trump’s decision to exit the INF Treaty caused the greatest concern. But in 2022, Moscow is openly threatening to use nuclear weapons in war. In 2018, filmmaker Andreas Orth interviewed military experts from France, Germany, Russia and the US. He looked at images of a new generation of nuclear weapons, and even filmed in once top-secret former nuclear missile installations. Four years on, in the wake of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, how do experts assess the situation? How great is the danger of nuclear weapons being used in the war against Ukraine? "The New Cold War – More Nuclear Weapons in Europe?" is a critical look at current nuclear armament and what it means for Europe. #documentary #dwdocumentary DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. 'I'm not bluffing!': Putin threatens to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. A desperate Vladimir Putin today issued a chilling nuclear threat to the West, hatching a plan to annex occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia and vowing to use 'all means' to defend them. He then added: 'If there is a threat to the territorial integrity of our country, and in protecting our people we will certainly use all means available to us - and I'm not bluffing... Those trying to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the tables can turn on them.' Putin also announced the partial mobilisation of Russia's military reserves - some 300,000 men - in the hope of turning the tide of the war in his favour, after his army suffered an humiliating defeat near Kharkiv last week that sparked fury in Russia and calls for him to resign. #Putin #PutinRussia #Russia #ukraine #nuclear #russiaukrainewar #ukrainewar Original Article: 🤍 Original Video: 🤍 Daily Mail Homepage: 🤍 Daily Mail Facebook: 🤍 Daily Mail IG: 🤍 Daily Mail Snap: 🤍 Daily Mail Twitter: 🤍 Daily Mail Pinterest: 🤍 Get the free Daily Mail mobile app: 🤍

Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling up thousands of extra troops to fight in Ukraine after suffering setbacks on the battlefield. Mr Putin said the partial mobilisation was necessary to ensure Russian territorial integrity. In a televised address Mr Putin also issued a thinly-veiled threat that he could use nuclear weapons. He said the West was engaging in "nuclear blackmail" and that Moscow had "lots of weapons to reply". He declared: “When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. It's not a bluff.” Protests broke out in Russia following the announcement of mobilisation. It applies to 300,000 military reservists. The mobilisation is the first since World War Two and comes after Ukraine's forces made gains in a rapid counter-offensive this month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said it showed Mr Putin wanted to drown Ukraine in blood, including that of his own soldiers. Why does Britain have nuclear weapons?

The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been developed by American and British scientists working together, but soon after the Second World War, Britain found itself out of the loop with the US no longer willing to collaborate. The Soviet Union tested their own nuclear weapon in 1949. And the United States was on its way to testing the first H- bomb, 1000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Britain was desperate to enter the arms race. And by 1952 it succeeded with Operation Hurricane, becoming the third nuclear power in the world. But why? Why did Britain want nuclear weapons when already part of NATO and close allies with the US? And why do they still have them today?
