Watch latest videos, sometimes even early releases! Sign up for the newsletter: 🤍 [or] slateblackindustries (dot) com 👉 Newsletter The Russian Makarov PM was a symbol of the Soviet Union. Everything from the cartridge to the pistol design was an overhaul in the 50's for a newer, more robust, easily maintained pistol with a safety. The straight blow-back action used the 9x18mm makarov cartridge, similar to the Walther PP in 9mm Kurz. We've shot the PPK in 9mm Kurz in the past and it had horrible ergonomics, high recoil... and performed poorly on the course. What about the Soviet take on the direct-blowback action? In true communist fashion, this pistol was manufactured by the Ernst Thälmann "Automobile and Hunting Weapons factory" in Suhl, East Germany. The DDR state-owned factory made two-wheeled vehicles, hunting rifles, air rifles, Makarov pistols and Kalashnikov rifles. You've been asking for it for years, so we finally reviewed the classic Makarov pistol. Is it just a Russian copy of the Walther PP, or did it play a more unique role in firearms history? We're also taking a look at the ballistics of the 9x18 Makarov cartridge and how the Makarov stacks up as a carry gun option today. Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford tells us about a Russian gun almost as "iconic" as the AK-47 - the Makarov pistol. The Soviet Army made do with the Tokarev TT-33 pistol and obsolete Nagant M1895 revolver as their standard-issue sidearms in World War II. Post-war trials seeking a new service pistol eventually led to the adoption of the "Pistolét Makárova". Nikolai Fyodorovich Makarov's design borrows from the Walther PP, but it's chambered in its own cartridge, the 9x18mm Makarov, a round similar in size to - but NOT interchangeable with - the 9mm Luger (9x19mm Parabellum). Typical of Russian firearm designs, the all-steel Makarov is robust, reliable, and elegantly simple. The double action / single action pistol has a decocker that also serves as a manual safety. The barrel is permanently fixed to the frame because the Makarov has a straight blowback action, with the recoil spring around the barrel, like the Walther. A mag release in the heel of the grip drops the 8-round magazine. The Makarov outlived the Soviet Union and stayed in service with the Russian military and police agencies until 2003, when the MP-443 Grach pistol started supplanting it. Plenty of Makarovs are still in daily service in Russia, former Soviet Bloc countries, and the Middle East.

AMAZON Store: 🤍 PATREON: 🤍 JOIN USCCA LEGAL SELF DEFENSE NETWORK: 🤍 CHECK OUT OUR MUSIC CHANNEL: 🤍 I think this video should give you all a pretty good idea of a few of the most common Makarov variants and how they shoot. No matter what you choose, these guns are hard to beat for the money. I remember when you could pick these up for around $139. Those were the days. These days, you can still find a decent PA-63 for around $200. Most Makarov PMs commercial export or military will bring a minimum of $250 all day long. CZ82s are still relatively common and can be had for around $300. Polish P-64 pistols are still pretty common and can be had for around $200. I did not have the P-64 available to include in this video. This is not all the Makarov variants out there, but definitely the most commonly encountered. Whatever you choose, it'll be a winner. The PSM is a Soviet pistol from the late 1970s which has gotten itself quite the fanciful reputation here in the US, thanks to extreme rarity and some imaginative magazine articles. Common lore would have you believe that the PSM and its 5.45x18mm bottlenecked cartridge is capable of astounding feats of armor penetration, and that it was designed specifically for KGB assassins. The truth is rather more mundane - the PSM was a sidearm for high ranking officers who did not want to deal with carrying a Makarov pistol. Much like the US use of the 1911 and the Colt 1903 back during WW2, general-rank Soviet officers carried sidearms as badges of rank, not as actual combat weapons. To that end, the PSM is extremely thin to make it as unobtrusive as possible. The 5.45x18mm cartridge is basically a centerfire .22 long rifle ballistically. It does offer armor penetration that would be surprising to some, because its metal jacket, mild steel core, and small frontal area are all beneficial in piercing Kevlar. That is a side effect of the design, however, and not an original intent. Mechanically, the PSM is a simple blowback action, and very similar to the Makarov. Thanks to Mike Carrick of Arms Heritage magazine for providing the PSM and its ammunition for this video! The Makarov pistol or PM (Russian: Пистолет Макарова, Pistolet Makarova, literally Makarov's Pistol) is a Russian semi-automatic pistol.
A quick look at a nice Bulgarian Makarov I picked up from Classic Firearms. First person pov view and close up detailed footage.
The Makarov pistol or PM (Russian: Пистолет Макарова, Pistolet Makarova, literally Makarov's Pistol) is a Russian semi-automatic pistol. Under the project leadership of Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov, it became the Soviet Union's standard military and police side arm from 1951 to 1991. In 1951, the PM was selected because of its simplicity (few moving parts), economy, ease of manufacturing, and reasonable stopping power.[3] It remained in wide front-line service with Soviet military and police until and beyond the end of the USSR in 1991. Today, the Makarov is a popular handgun for concealed carry in the United States[citation needed][dubious – discuss]; variants of the pistol remain in production in Russia, China, and Bulgaria. In the U.S., surplus Soviet and East German military Makarovs are listed as eligible curio and relic items by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, because the countries of manufacture, the USSR and the GDR, no longer exist.
