The pass rate for the Chartered Financial Analyst Level I exam administered in May was the lowest since testing began in 1963. Only 25% passed the latest test, down from 44% for those who sat for the February examination. Bloomberg's Eddie van der Walt is one of them. He's on "Bloomberg Surveillance: Early Edition." This was me in 2019. But more interestingly, this was my calendar in 2019. At that time I was working a full time finance job, studying 7 days a week for the CFA program, working on this YouTube channel, and trying to do all the normal things in life. Don't get me wrong, 2019 was one of the best years of my life so far. But it was pretty crazy. The routine that I utilized during this time was intense, but simple. And it allowed me to do all of these things pretty successfully. I passed both CFA exams I studied for that year, I made big steps in my career, and planted the seeds for what has now become the 467th best finance YouTube channel. All kidding aside, the primary reason I was able to pass the CFA exams during that time was attributable to this schedule. And since then, I have seen several people or outlets discuss what is a very similar strategy to this, and why it can be so beneficial to accomplishing goals. So we are going to walk through exactly how this schedule works, showing you the rules and systems that make it so successful. Keep in mind this is a schedule for a young professional, with a significant other, but before kids. I really don't think I could have studied enough to pass the CFA exams before having kids, but I know there are some people out there who do it, so hats off to them. The first thing to do when building an effective schedule is to understand how much total time is needed for the priorities. For me and I think many of you watching this video, time spent working is not negotiable, but it's not the main priority we are working around here either. Your work hours are more set in stone, sure they can fluctuate day to day, but what I mean is, working feels more required. It feels like it owns your time more. So we can start there and say, okay I have to spend from 8 am to 6pm commuting to work, working, then commuting home. And 99% of the time, there really isn't any flexibility here. Now I was really lucky to work a job that was mostly 40 hours a week, with maybe 1 or 2 nights going late. I understand for many of you who work more than that, you will need to push this next part of your schedule later on, but it can still work that way too so stay with me. So if your next priority is studying, like for a CFA exam. You need to really understand the total amount of hours required. We know the average CFA candidate studieds 300 hours, and we also know most CFA candidates fail and will never become charterholder. The reason I found it important to know how many total hours I was going to study, was because we are also going to prioritize THESE hours in the schedule, but more on this in a bit. Finally, for the third, fourth, or fifth hobby type things can take a backseat, but you still should get an idea on the amount of hours that will go into each. For me these were spending time with my wife (30 minutes per day), playing video games (a few hours on Fridays and the weekend) and working on YouTube videos for about 3 flexible hours per week. These things can be shuffled around, but should still happen just so that your life isn't 100% consumed by the 2 priorities. Let's talk about how that prioritization happens. 🤍 Get 1 free book from Audible Is the CFA Program worth the effort? The CFA Exams, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3, can require over 1000 hours of study time. Many people end up passing these exams and still struggle to find jobs in the investment management industry. The CFA Program does not have many job search tools built into it. You still have to network, learn financial modeling, learn about current events and investing, and be able to interview well for the job. The CFA is not the golden ticket some people make it out to be, and people should go into the program knowing this. The number of charterholders is increasing faster than the number of jobs in asset management. Passive investing, fee compression, and consolidation in the industry are further eliminating jobs. So the bottom line is you have more Charterholders competing for fewer jobs. Does this actually mean the CFA Charter is losing value? Not necessarily I think It’s a similar trend to college degrees. 50 years ago, very few people went to college, so if you did, it guaranteed you a good job. Now, not so much, the number of people going to college has increase much faster than the supply of jobs that require a degree. So many people who went to college are in jobs that don’t require a degree. So if you want a traditional job in the investing industry, the CFA is becoming more of a bare minimum requirement. You could argue this is making the Charter more valuable for certain careers like portfolio manager, because you basically have to have it. This also means even if you pass all 3 exams, you might end up in a role that doesn’t necessarily require the charter. Roles like Investment banking, commercial banking, some consulting roles, risk management, wealth management, Corporate finance, sales. These fields usually don’t require the Charter. But even if you do pursue these other paths, the CFA can still help you a lot, because it’s less likely your competition will have taken the CFA, you’ll stand out out more in that group. Is the 1000 hours worth it for everyone in these other fields? Maybe not. It depends on how much you intrinsically value the knowledge gained in the CFA. If you’re only in it for the job and the money, probably not. If you’re genuinely curious about investing, it very well might be. Here are the 3 biggest benefits of the CFA Program 1) It’s a structured program to broadly learn about investing. Is the most comprehensive program out there on this topic, you will learn a lot. 2) It’s a Signaling device - you are signaling to employers that you are passionate about investing, and that you have the discipline required to pass these tests. It still is the strongest credential in the investments industry, it does make your resume stronger 3) You join the network of Charterholders, charter holders may be more willing to talk to you help you out if you also have the charter. But the absolute best reason to do the program is you want to genuinely want to learn the nuts and bolts of investing. You want the tools to figure out how much Stocks, bonds are worth, and how to manage money. While mixing in some economics, and data analysis. So Ask yourself, Are you genuinely interested in the financial markets? Do you read the Wall Street Journal for fun? Do you talk about investing with your friends for fun? This exam is brutal, and if you hate every minute of studying, ask yourself, if learning this stuff is so painful, are you actually going to enjoy a job that requires this knowledge? If you really do enjoy investing, I think generally it usually is worth it. For me I think the material was worth learning no matter what. I’m more comfortable managing my own money because of what I learned, I understand current events much better, I like to talk about stocks, so I’m glad I did it. The CFA Institute has made changes to the exams. Candidates now have double the number of attempts at level 1, 2 and 3. The CFA exams have also dropped from six hours to four and a half. There are some benefits to these changes but I believe they're lowering the value of passing the CFA exams. Hopefully the CFA designation isn't following in the footsteps of MBA degrees.

There are a number of myths, pros and cons to taking the CFA exams and earning your Chaterholder, something that you should consider before taking the exam. The CFA (or Chartered Financial Analyst) Charterholder is one of the most well respected and highly sought after qualifications in the world of finance. This sounds great but as a result, the exams are a huge commitment on top of working the long hours expected when working in finance. Therefore before you commit to taking the exams you need to know everything about the exams, this includes the pros and cons of taking the exams, but also the myths behind taking the CFA. Pros. It's impressive. On average people take 300 hours to study for each exam, Over the course of 4-5 years. It takes a huge time commitment and dedication, making it a huge achievement. It also shows that you are smart and you work hard which is what every boss wants from any employee. The CFA Charterholder is the highest credential in finance, so why not get it. It is something that only 167,000 worldwide have, which might sound a lot but there are 1.1 million people who work in financial services in the UK, and the UK is only a fraction of the total finance jobs in the world. The Charter is internationally recognised, meaning that anyone in the world knows what has gone into becoming a Chaterholder. You may have gone to a really good university for your subject in your country but the person who is sitting in another country may not know that, it helps set you apart from the competition. Finally it is relatively affordable. Costing between $2,500 - $8,000 (£2,000 to £6,000) on average to sit the exams (that’s assuming passing each level first time), and add in the additional teaching materials which can go up to $2,500 (£2,000). But compare that to MBA which can be in excess of $100,000 it is a steal. Cons Big time commitment. Becoming a CFA Charterholder is a huge time commitment. It takes on average 300 hours per exam and takes on average 4-5 years. So prepared to give up socialising and hobbies. Another con that is less talked about is the opportunity cost. As people are so focussed on passing the CFA exams they may not work optimally, meaning they network less, may take less projects and not work long hours. Which is understandable, but doing those things could help in your job and further your career and is what you could be missing out on when sitting the CFA exams. And remember that the Charterholder will not help your day job directly. The CFA is broad, and includes topics such as Equity, Fixed Income and Derivatives, each one of those areas are broad and could be an exam on their own. The exams will help you understand the whole universe that is the world of finance but it is unlikely to help your day to day job directly. The only way to do that is to do your job. Myths There are many myths that you may have heard about the CFA exams. The first is that it won’t get you into finance. The CFA charterholder will not get you into finance, it isn’t your golden ticket. If you have experience in something completely unrelated to the role employers will not hire you purely because you have the charterholder. You don’t just pass CFA Level One and have banks queueing up for you. It also won’t further your career. As mentioned there is an opportunity cost to studying for the CFA. Those three letters after your name may be an achievement, but they do not mean that you are better at your job, need to be paid more or have the right for a promotion. Passing first time does not make you better. Many people will like to quote that they passed first time, that in itself is a huge achievement, however it does not mean that the person is better at their job or a better finance professional as a result. Some people have more time to study, some people have jobs and bosses who are more supportive. Everyone’s circumstances are different which means that some people just don’t have the time to commit to studying that others can.
